First plastic wave energy converter that moves reliably with iglidur

Profile

  • What was needed: plain bearings for mounting the flaps in the Volta wave energy device
  • Requirements: resistance to wear, corrosion and salt water, low moisture absorption, cost-effective
  • Area of application: renewable-energy/hydropower industry
PolyGen Ltd in Chesterfield specialises in the development of high-density polyethylene wave energy converters. The Volta wave energy device is the world's first instrument for generating renewable energy from ocean waves that is made predominantly of plastic. Its special feature: flexibility. In a storm, the construction bends, which makes it more durable compared to existing designs.

Problem

The system works with several large flaps that convert the wave energy into hydraulic energy, which is then converted into electricity with the help of a turbine. Each flap is connected to the carrier system via two axes. The bearing points of the axes are located directly under the water surface - i.e. where the wave power is strongest. Due to the high mechanical stress and the corrosive salt water, it was impossible to use conventional metal bearings. The developers at PolyGen, who are themselves very familiar with the technical advantages of plastic, were open to bearings made of plastic from the start.

Solution

With the support of the plain bearing experts from igus, the ideal solution was found: iglidur plain bearings made of the material H370, which was specially developed for wet environments. The material is characterised by particularly low moisture absorption and high wear resistance under water. By using the readily available 40mm flange variant, PolyGen was also able to significantly simplify the hinge design - a step that saved additional costs.
